Becoming an instructor is a change of responsibility, not simply the next recreational course. The aim is to learn how to help other people learn. This independent YouDive pathway explains the stages and the questions to ask; it is not PADI training or an eligibility decision.
The instructor journey
- Develop as a diver
- Build leadership experience
- Complete instructor development
- Meet examination and work requirements
This diagram summarises the article. It is not an in-water procedure, identification image or competency assessment.
Understand the distinct stages
The PADI IDC combines Assistant Instructor and Open Water Scuba Instructor development. Instructor candidates then progress to the Instructor Examination when eligible. Existing instructors from other organisations may have a different entry route, which PADI and the Course Director must confirm. Passing through one stage should not be described as automatic completion of all the others.
Build a realistic personal route
Start with your current qualification, recent experience and the kind of work you hope to do. If you are not yet a Divemaster, research that programme as a meaningful leadership-development stage rather than a formality to rush through. Ask a prospective Course Director what preparation they expect and what would make them recommend additional development before the IDC.
Plan beyond the examination
Allow for application processing, current professional status, required arrangements and an employer’s induction before assuming you can begin work. A qualification does not itself supply a job. Discuss supervised observation, mentoring and the setting in which you hope to teach. Keep your first employment plan separate from the training provider’s promotional promises.
A practical comparison
| Look at | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Diver development | Experience and appropriate prerequisite training | Review the actual starting point |
| Divemaster / qualifying leadership | Professional preparation | Confirm the pathway with the provider |
| IDC then IE | Development followed by examination | Check each stage’s eligibility |
| First teaching role | Status, arrangements and induction | Confirm before taking responsibility |
THINK IT THROUGH
A question to take away
An offer advertises an IDC place. Does that establish you can attend the IE or start teaching immediately afterwards?
Read the explanation
No. Confirm eligibility for each stage, the certification process and the arrangements required before work.

Is YouDive an IDC provider?
