Visitors from Sydney or further north routinely underestimate this and cut dives short as a result.
Eden is also one of the best places in Australia for surface whale watching during the migration, which runs roughly June to November. For divers travelling with non-divers, that combination makes the far south coast work as a trip rather than only as a dive destination.
The Empire Gladstone wreck is the region's best-known site and sits in conditions that are genuinely exposed. Local advice about when it is workable is worth taking seriously, and divers should plan around a window rather than a date.
