Meet the site

Abrahams Bosom Reserve covers the coastal bushland, heath and fern forest on the northern Beecroft Peninsula next to Currarong. It is known mainly for its walks – the short Wreck Walk and the longer Coomies Walk – which lead to lookouts, remote beaches and sheltered coves that Shoalhaven tourism and the NSW government describe as great for swimming and snorkelling. The regional tourism body recommends the reserve for independent snorkellers seeking quieter, less crowded exploration.

The coves have rocky edges and sand patches with typical South Coast shallow reef life: blue groper, luderick, bream, leatherjackets, wrasse and small schooling fish, with rays on the sand. The Wreck Walk passes Whale Point, Wilsons Beach and the remains of the 1928 SS Merimbula, which lies in shallow water off the point and can be snorkelled on a flat day (see its separate entry). Water clarity is often good because the coves face the open sea on the northern side of the peninsula.

Scuba-specific documentation is limited, so treat the reserve as a snorkelling destination and a gateway to the Merimbula wreck. The reserve has free entry, a car park, picnic area and toilets, but it does not cater for people with access needs, and carrying heavy gear along the tracks is hard work. Parts of the wider Beecroft Peninsula are Defence land, so check access if venturing beyond the reserve. Water temperatures on this coast range from about 14–15 °C in late winter to 22–23 °C in late summer, so a 7 mm wetsuit or semi-dry is sensible for most of the year.

Ask how swell and local exposure affect the proposed entry, exit and route.

Historical access notes exist for this record, but have not been independently verified for current use. Request current directions from the operator or site manager rather than following an old entry description.
