Meet the site
Anniversary Reef Wall is one of the newer names on the Terrigal site list. The Terrigal Underwater Group records that it was named after being discovered on Terrigal Dive's 40th anniversary dive, and Muddy Puddle Diver places it off Bateau Bay in the same broad reef system as Silver Drummer Wall, Bonito Reef and The Pinnacle. At about 18 m it is one of the shallower offshore options, which makes it useful for Open Water divers and for second dives after the Adelaide or Foggy Cave. The site is a reef wall rather than a flat reef - a line of rock rising several metres off the sand with ledges, cracks and undercuts along its face. Walls like this on the Central Coast collect sponges, sea squirts and small gorgonians on their shaded faces, while kelp and turfing algae cover the tops. The undercuts are where the fish gather: bullseyes, one-spot pullers and ladder-finned pomfrets in the shadows, red morwong and eastern blue gropers along the face, and wobbegongs resting at the base. Published detail on the exact layout is limited, and the site is not dived as often as the classics, which gives it an exploratory feel. Navigation is straightforward, since the wall provides a natural handrail: follow it out, turn, and return along the top. For newer divers it is a chance to experience wall diving in comfortable depths; for regulars it is a less-visited alternative to Two Poles and Fifeshire. Ask the operator about it when you want a relaxed reef dive in the Bateau Bay area and the swell allows the longer run north from The Haven.
