Baird Bay is home to one of Australia's best-known marine mammal swims. For decades a local family operator, now trading as Baird Bay Ocean Eco Experience, has taken small groups into the sheltered waters of the bay to snorkel with Australian sea lions and wild bottlenose dolphins. Tours run from October to April and last four to five hours. Swimmers first visit Jones Island, home to an endangered Australian sea lion colony, where animals slip off the rocks into chest-deep water and play around snorkellers – twisting, somersaulting and inspecting masks. The operator reports that the colony is growing, with 32 pups recorded in late 2024. The boat then crosses the bay to find the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, which numbers about 25 animals, with recent sightings of up to 70. The experience is entirely snorkel-based, with no scuba, and the animals are never fed; swimmers interact with them in their natural habitat on the animals' terms. Group size is capped at 20. The water is shallow, clear and calm, which makes it suitable for confident swimmers of all ages, and non-swimmers can come along to watch from the boat. For divers travelling the west coast, Baird Bay offers a gentler, more intimate alternative to the Neptune Islands and Hopkins Island trips out of Port Lincoln. It is regarded as one of South Australia's best snorkel experiences and justifies the long drive. Book well ahead in the peak summer holidays, allow a night in Streaky Bay or at Baird Bay itself, and bring warm clothes for the boat ride home, as even summer water on this coast is cool. Outside the October-April season, the sea lions remain at Jones Island but tours do not run.
