Meet the site
Balding Bay is a small, secluded bay tucked between Horseshoe Bay and Radical Bay on Magnetic Island's north-east coast, better known to walkers as an informal beach reached by a bush track. For divers, the North Queensland Underwater Explorers Club uses it as the reliable alternative when Orchard Rocks, a few hundred metres further east, is too rough or crowded with fishermen. The dive follows a wall that runs along the western shoreline, starting at a sharp, 90-degree boulder point. It is modest in scale – about 7 m deep – but sheltered: the club reports no significant current or swell and visibility of 7–8 m in ideal conditions, which is good for the island. Granite boulders and coral growth make up the wall, with overhangs where juvenile painted crayfish shelter, and mid-sized coral trout patrol the reef. Small reef fish, nudibranchs and sea stars round out the list. The club notes an unusual collection of lost gear on the bottom – stainless-steel ladders, telescopic gaffs, fishing rods and reels, weight belts, anchors and mooring hooks – a reflection of the boats that use the bay on sunny weekends. That boating traffic is the site's main hazard, and a towable dive flag is advised. Balding Bay is an easy, shallow boat dive suited to newer divers or as a relaxed second dive, and a pleasant snorkel for those who walk in. It has no facilities of its own and no operator runs it; Pleasure Divers' guided dives stay in Alma and Geoffrey bays. For island visitors with access to a small boat, it is a quiet corner worth an hour in the water.
