Meet the site
Ballast Head is a headland on the southern shore of Nepean Bay, about 19 km south-east of Kingscote, taking its name from the ballast stone once quarried here for ships. The locality includes two South Australian heritage sites – a fish canning factory site and the ruins of Jacob Seaman's hut – reflecting its early industrial and settler history.
Like the rest of Nepean Bay, the waters around the headland are sheltered from the south-westerly swell, shallow, and fringed by seagrass meadows and low reef. Expect brown algae and small kelp on the rocks, sponges in shaded spots, and the bay's typical fish – leatherjackets, wrasse, whiting, old wives – along with cuttlefish, rays and possibly weedy or leafy seadragons in the weed. The Kangaroo Head area to the east is known as one of the best places for leafy seadragons, and similar habitat occurs along this shore.
Access is informal and parts of the coast are private farmland, so check before crossing land. The site's value lies in its shelter and in being an alternative to Kingscote's jetty on a calm day. It suits Open Water divers and snorkellers happy to explore a little-documented reef. Divers who find good sites here are encouraged to share their observations with the local dive shop or the Marine Life Network so the site can be better documented.
