Meet the site
Beautiful Mooring is a sheltered Opal Reef snorkel site described by Wavelength Reef Cruises as having delicate staghorn corals and multiple anemonefish species. The name reflects the site's appeal – calm water and fragile coral in excellent condition. Staghorn coral is a branching Acropora that grows quickly but breaks easily, so it thrives in sheltered spots where waves are gentle. At Beautiful Mooring, extensive thickets provide shelter for damselfish, chromis and juvenile fish, which dart into the branches when approached. The site also has many anemones, each hosting anemonefish; Wavelength notes several species, which may include the orange clownfish, the pink anemonefish and the spinecheek anemonefish. The shelter makes the site ideal for snorkellers of all abilities, including children and first-timers, and it is a good place for underwater photography thanks to the calm, clear water. No depth figures are published; the snorkel area is shallow. Divers visiting on a private charter would find a shallow reef best suited to a relaxed, low-depth dive, taking great care with buoyancy around the fragile staghorn. Wavelength is a snorkel-only operator that runs a single fast catamaran to its own exclusive moorings, carrying marine biologists who guide snorkel tours and give reef talks; the skipper picks three of the company's sites each day according to wind and tide, so no single site can be guaranteed. Scuba divers who want to see the site underwater at depth would need to charter a small-group dive boat, and the site name may not be used by other operators.
