Big Wall is a Passions of Paradise site on Norman Reef, recommended by the operator in gentle northerly winds. The wall starts at 4-6 m and descends to 28 m, and its standout feature is unique finger-like formations created by wind and wave action, long spurs of coral that project from the wall with channels between them. Passions lists small sharks, turtles and pelagic fish, and says the site suits all experience levels, because the wall's shallow top lets novices and snorkellers enjoy it while experienced divers can use its full depth. The finger formations are what make the dive memorable. They create a series of ridges and gullies along the wall, each gully a sheltered pocket where fish gather, and the ridges carry dense hard coral on their tops with softer growth and fans on their shaded sides. Following the wall through the fingers gives constant variety in light and topography. Small reef sharks cruise the base, turtles rest on ledges, and pelagic fish, trevally, mackerel and occasionally tuna, sweep in along the outer edge. Schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish are usually present. Because the wall runs from shallow to deep, the dive can be run as a multi-level profile that makes good use of gas and no-decompression time. Big Wall is often paired with Alan's Wall, the other Passions wall on Norman. For photographers, the finger formations make striking wide-angle subjects, especially with a diver silhouetted in a gully and sunlight filtering down from the shallow top. Visibility is typically 15-25 m.
