Black Reef is one of the outer reefs east of the Whitsundays that feature on current liveaboard itineraries. Whitsunday Expeditions lists it among the possible destinations for its 3-night voyages aboard the 100 ft SV Summer Jo, alongside Bait Reef Lagoon, Kennedy, Elizabeth, Seagull, Trigger and Knuckle reefs, with the actual reef chosen according to weather, tides and visibility. Beyond that listing, published site descriptions of Black Reef are scarce. The reefs of this outer group share a general pattern: a reef top of hard coral close to the surface, slopes and walls on the exposed faces cut by gullies, and sheltered back-reef areas with bommies on sand. Visibility is usually better than at the island fringing reefs, commonly 10–20 m, and fish life includes coral trout, Maori wrasse, trevally, reef sharks and turtles, with hard and soft corals on the walls. Because Black Reef is not visited by day boats, it offers quieter diving than Hardy or Bait. The trade-off is that information on specific moorings, depths and features must come from the liveaboard crew on the day. Divers interested in Black Reef should ask liveaboard operators which parts of the reef they use and what conditions to expect; coordinates here are approximate, and zoning should be checked on the GBRMPA map.
