Meet the site

Blue Buoy is an Opal Reef mooring that Scuba IQ describes as unassuming at first glance but with multiple exceptional features, and that the Visit Port Douglas Daintree dive guide singles out for sea turtle encounters – both loggerhead and green turtles – plus juvenile fish, pipefish and razorfish. It is a Calypso site as well as a Scuba IQ one. The reef itself is a mix of coral heads, sand patches and rubble. At first it does not look spectacular, but the variety of habitat supports a surprising range of life. Turtles are the headline: they rest on the reef, feed on sponges and algae, and are often relaxed around divers who approach slowly. The sand and rubble edges are home to smaller critters – pipefish, razorfish hovering head-down in the water column, gobies and shrimps – and juvenile reef fish shelter in the coral. Scuba IQ notes that Blue Buoy can be linked with Wild West, a small, shallow site nearby, on the same dive, giving a longer, more varied route. Depths are not published but the site is described as shallow and relaxed; most of the dive is likely to be in the 5–12 m range, making it suitable for all levels and for snorkellers. Visibility is typically 15–30 m. Blue Buoy suits divers who enjoy slowing down to look for small things, and those who want a high chance of turtle encounters.
