Blue Lagoon on Opal Reef is a Wavelength snorkel site described as tide-dependent and shallow, with beautiful coral gardens, occasional whitetip sharks and green turtles. The name is shared with lagoon sites elsewhere – there are also Blue Lagoons at Agincourt, Lizard Island and Thetford Reef – but this one lies on Opal. Lagoons on outer reefs are enclosed or semi-enclosed areas behind the reef crest. Protected from waves, they develop delicate coral gardens with branching and plate corals that would be broken on more exposed parts of the reef. The water is calm and clear when the tide is right, and the sand floor reflects light, giving the site its blue colour. Coral gardens host damselfish, butterflyfish, wrasse and parrotfish, and larger animals – whitetip reef sharks and green turtles – occasionally wander in from the reef edge. Look for giant clams among the coral and sea cucumbers on the sand. The site is tide-dependent: at low tide it may be too shallow to access or snorkel safely, so Wavelength visits it only when conditions allow. No depth figures are published; the lagoon is shallow throughout. Wavelength is a snorkel-only operator that runs a single fast catamaran to its own exclusive moorings, carrying marine biologists who guide snorkel tours and give reef talks; the skipper picks three of the company's sites each day according to wind and tide, so no single site can be guaranteed. Scuba divers who want to see the site underwater at depth would need to charter a small-group dive boat, and the site name may not be used by other operators.
