Meet the site
Boat Harbour at Gerringong is a small natural harbour on the town's rocky northern shore, with a boat ramp and a 40 m ocean rock pool tucked around the corner from the car park. It is primarily a swimming and family snorkelling venue rather than a scuba site, but it is included here because it is one of the named snorkel spots on this stretch of coast and a gentle introduction to the local reef life.
The pool is roughly 40 m long with about 30 m of swimmable length and is deepest at its eastern end. Its rocky floor supports patches of seaweed where snorkellers find flathead, sea stars, sea slugs and small schools of fish, and at low tide the flat rocks and small tidal pools around it can be explored on foot. On flat days the rocks outside the pool offer more of the same, with luderick, bream and occasional blue groper typical of the Kiama coast.
Facilities are good: accessible toilets, cold showers, a gas barbecue with a gazebo and picnic tables, and free parking. There are no lifeguards and dogs are not permitted. For scuba divers the site is of limited interest beyond a shallow gear check, but for families, snorkellers and those staying in Gerringong it is a safe, pretty spot. Keep well clear of the boat ramp, which is used by fishing boats, and never snorkel outside the pool in any swell. It pairs well with the Werri Point platform at the other end of Werri Beach for a family day of rock-pool exploration.
