Meet the site
Bondi Wall is a straightforward, scenic wall dive off the northern headland of Australia's best-known beach. The stretch of coast from the Harbour south to Bondi is high sandstone cliff and the seabed mirrors it: a flat sand plain at 30–34 m, a rock shelf that rises to 27 m, and then a wall that climbs in one go to a plateau at 20–21 m. The wall runs roughly north–south for several hundred metres, meandering slightly, with a few places where it steps onto an intermediate ledge rather than dropping cleanly. It is not a tall wall – six metres at most – but its length and the way it is undercut in places give it real presence. The sponge cover is the attraction: the face and the ledges are thick with encrusting and finger sponges, sea tulips and gorgonians, and the site is one of the better nudibranch hunting grounds on the Eastern Suburbs coast. Weedy seadragons are seen occasionally in the kelp along the plateau edge. The fish life is the weak point – McFadyen notes it is visually exciting but lacking in fish – though silver sweep and yellowtail school above the wall and blue groper and sergeant baker are resident. The site only became diveable in the modern sense after July 1991 when the Bondi sewage treatment plant was connected to the deepwater ocean outfall four kilometres offshore; before that the North Bondi area was effectively off limits. It is dived from charter boats as the shallower second dive of the day, and with the plateau at 21 m it still calls for reasonable air consumption and an advanced certification. Good for photographers wanting sponge and nudibranch macro, and for anyone who wants to dive under the Bondi skyline.
