Meet the site
Bowl Reef is one of the lesser-known reefs of the Townsville sector, listed by the Marine Life Network as a varied site suited to both day and night diving. Its structure combines shallow areas of coral heads with drop-offs decorated by large gorgonian fans and sea whips, and caves along the faces that shelter moray eels and resting reef fish. Visibility is usually 10–30 m. The animal list is a strong one for a mid-to-outer shelf reef: eagle rays cruising off the drop-offs, reef sharks, sea snakes, clownfish in anemones, nudibranchs and a rich growth of soft corals. At night the shallow coral heads come alive with invertebrates, and the site has a reputation as a good night dive for liveaboard groups. Bowl Reef is also notable as a scientific site: it is among the reefs studied by AIMS and James Cook University, and has been used in research on reef fish and coral recovery. Access is the limitation. Bowl sits beyond the reefs visited daily by Townsville operators and is typically reached only by liveaboard or long-range charter. Current can build along the drop-offs, and exposure to south-east trades means it needs calm weather. Documentation of exact layout, position and depths is sparse, so the depth figures here are indicative, drawn from general descriptions rather than surveyed data. For divers on a multi-day Townsville charter, Bowl offers a good mix: an easy, colourful shallow reef for snorkelling and night dives, and gorgonian walls with eagle rays and sharks for day dives. For everyone else, it remains a name on the chart.
