Meet the site
Burrewarra Point is the headland topped by a lighthouse south of Batemans Bay, between Guerilla Bay and Broulee. Divers call the site Burri Wall, and it has one of the best reputations on the South Coast. The Marine Life Network describes a sandy gutter and a rock wall with sea fans, diverse and colourful fish and often clear visibility, calling it one of the best dives in NSW but warning that it is affected by current. Abyss describes staged walls that drop to 18 m and then to 30 m, a 15-minute boat ride from town, and notes the chance of photographing whales in season. Beneath the Bay calls Burri Wall 'an amazing vibrant vertical wall of colour' between 18 and 30 m.
The wall faces the open sea and is covered in sponges, gorgonian sea fans, sea squirts and ascidians in reds, oranges and yellows. The fish life ranges, in Spirit Divers' words, from the smallest to some of the biggest in the local ocean: schools of yellowtail, sweep and one-spot pullers, red morwong, blue groper, eastern blue devilfish and wobbegongs, with kingfish and bonito passing in summer. Burrewarra is also listed by NSW DPIRD among grey nurse shark areas where special rules apply, so grey nurse sharks may be seen. Humpback whales pass close to the headland on their winter and spring migrations and can sometimes be heard underwater.
The depth, current and exposure make this a site for Advanced divers. It is best dived with a local operator who can read the current and pick the right side of the point. On a clear day with little current it is a genuinely spectacular wall dive and a highlight of any Batemans Bay trip.
