Cathedrals is described by Scuba IQ as the Blue Lagoon of Opal Reef, a site with endless swim-throughs that is rarely visited because it requires perfect conditions. I Love Cairns also lists it among Opal's named sites. It is a site guides save for special days, and a highlight when it happens. The name reflects the structure: coral has grown into arches, tunnels and vaulted chambers that resemble the interior of a cathedral, with shafts of sunlight streaming through openings in the roof. Swimming through these features is the main attraction. The swim-throughs are short and open, but they are numerous, so divers can weave from one to the next for much of the dive. Inside, the walls are lined with sponges, soft corals and fish sheltering from the light – soldierfish, squirrelfish, bigeyes and cardinalfish. Outside the swim-throughs the reef is a colourful garden of hard corals with reef fish, anemones and clams. The site's shelter and shallow depth mean the coral is often in excellent condition. Scuba IQ does not publish depths; lagoon-style swim-through sites of this kind are typically shallow, with most of the dive between 5 and 12 m. Good buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging coral or stirring up sand inside the swim-throughs. Note that Silverswift's Thetford Reef (Cairns) also has a site called Cathedral's. For divers who enjoy swim-throughs, this is one of the best sites on Opal.
