Meet the site
Chicken Reef was one of the quality dive sites of the Townsville sector in the 1980s, visited regularly by the liveaboards that then worked the outer reefs. The Marine Life Network describes its northern flank as a varied piece of reef with gullies, caves, overhangs and swim-throughs, and a fish community of sweetlips, surgeonfish, damselfish, fusiliers and parrotfish, in water that is often 10–30 m clear. Its recent story is a cautionary one. Cyclone Yasi, which crossed the coast at Mission Beach in February 2011 as a Category 5 system, passed over many of the Townsville and Cairns reefs, and Chicken Reef was among those badly affected. Observers note that coral cover remains low and recovery has been slow. The underlying topography – the gullies and caves that made it popular – is still there, and fish life is reasonable, but divers should not expect the dense coral that earned the reef its reputation. Chicken Reef sits near the outer edge of the shelf, which gives it better visibility than the inshore and mid-shelf reefs, and pelagic visitors are possible on the exposed faces. Current can run along the flanks. Today no operator schedules trips here; the reef is reached only on liveaboards or long-range charters from Townsville. It is included here because it features in regional site listings and because it is worth watching: reefs damaged by Yasi have been recovering at very different rates, and a return visit in coming years may find it much improved. Coordinates are approximate and should be checked against GBRMPA charts.
