Meet the site
Chinamans Beach is one of the small, sheltered beaches strung along the White Sands Walk between Greenfield Beach in Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The Culture Trip describes it as a local snorkelling secret that generally attracts fewer snorkellers than its famous neighbours, and several visitor guides list it among the bay's snorkel spots.
The beach is bounded by low rocky reef at each end, with sand and seagrass between. The reef supports the usual western-shore community – blue groper, luderick, bream, leatherjackets, wrasse and small schooling fish – while rays and flathead forage on the sand and small creatures shelter in the seagrass. It is shallow, calm in the right weather and quiet, which makes it an appealing snorkel for families and a gentle shallow dive for those willing to carry gear along the track.
There is little scuba-specific documentation, so depths and detailed features are not published; treat it as an easy exploratory site. The walk-in keeps crowds down but also means no facilities on the beach itself – the nearest toilets and parking are at Greenfield Beach. Like the rest of the western shore it is best in westerly weather and becomes choppy in strong north-easterlies. It lies within the Jervis Bay Marine Park, so zoning rules apply. Combine it with Greenfield/Blenheim or Little Hyams for a relaxed day of snorkelling along the White Sands Walk. A float with a dive flag is recommended if scuba diving, as kayaks and small boats sometimes come close to shore. Water temperatures range from about 15 °C in late winter to 23 °C in late summer, so a 5–7 mm wetsuit is sensible for anything longer than a quick summer snorkel, and a hood helps from June to October.
