Meet the site
Cod Rock is a lesser-known Bicheno shore dive from the end of Murray Street, recorded in the Marine Life Network guide to east coast diving. It rates it 5.5 out of 10: a colourful dive with zoanthids and a variety of seaweed beds, reaching 5-15 m, but one whose entry and exit become dangerous in rough seas because it is heavily exposed to easterly weather.
The reef is typical Bicheno granite, with boulders and gutters covered in brown algae and kelp in the shallows and zoanthids and sponges on shaded faces deeper down. Small to medium crayfish shelter in the cracks. Fish life includes the usual east coast species: wrasse, leatherjackets, banded morwong and schools of juvenile fish in the weed.
Cod Rock's value is as an alternative to the busy Waubs Bay area for divers who have their own gear and want a different shore dive. It is not as rich as the Governor Island sites or as easy as Waubs Bay, and it is only practical on genuinely calm days.
Documentation of this site is thin and dates from an older regional guide, so conditions and access should be checked on the day. Divers should also take note that it lies outside the Governor Island Marine Reserve, so normal fishing rules apply and line-fishers may be present on the rocks. Carrying a knife or line cutter is sensible for the same reason, and a surface marker helps boats heading in and out of the Gulch see divers on the way back.
