Meet the site
Coral Kingdom is exactly what its name promises: one of the best hard-coral gardens on the Ribbon Reefs. It lies between Ribbon Reefs No. 9 and 10 on a gently falling slope, and Mike Ball's photographers' guide describes prolific gardens of densely packed branching Acropora in every colour, massive boulder corals and stunning reef flats. It is a regular stop on Mike Ball's Cod Hole and Coral Sea trips, which describe staghorn beds, giant clams, parrotfish and barracuda.
The dive is shallow and bright. Most of the interest is in the top 12 m, where the staghorn and plate corals form a dense maze. Blue-green chromis and damselfish hover above every branching colony, and trumpetfish shadow coral trout, using them as cover to ambush prey. Juvenile palette surgeonfish tuck into coral clusters, and cuttlefish, often in groups of one to five, patrol the slope and display to divers.
Larger animals include schools of bumphead parrotfish grazing in the early mornings, whitetip reef sharks and spotted lagoon rays on the sand, barramundi cod and moray eels under ledges, and diagonal-banded and giant sweetlips. In summer manta rays pass by, and in winter eagle rays. Nudibranchs, including Notodoris gardineri and Flabellina exoplata, are common on the reef.
Mike Ball's itinerary materials sometimes pair the site with neighbouring Goggle Gardens. For a diver who wants to see what a healthy, recovering outer-reef coral garden looks like, it is one of the most satisfying dives on the Ribbons, and excellent for snorkellers. Keep well clear of the fragile branching colonies; fin damage in the shallows is the main threat to its recovery.
