Meet the site
Corner Shop is a moored wall dive on Bougainville Reef, described by marinelife.org.au as a wall at about 16 m with whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, Napoleon (Maori) wrasse, clown triggerfish, trevally, snapper and bannerfish. The name, a companion to nearby Walmart, suggests a reef corner stocked with a bit of everything.
The mooring gives straightforward access. Divers descend to the wall and follow it around the corner of the reef, where water movement concentrates fish. Sharks are the main attraction: whitetips rest on ledges and cruise along the face, and blacktips patrol the shallower edge. Maori wrasse, some very large, move along the wall and often approach divers. Clown triggerfish, with their bold spotted pattern, are common, and schools of trevally, snapper and bannerfish hang off the corner.
The wall itself is covered in hard and soft corals, sea fans and sponges, and drops away into deep water below the working depth of the dive. Visibility at Bougainville is typically 20–40 m, so the whole scene can be taken in at once. As with other Bougainville sites, currents are usually mild but can pick up on the corner.
It suits divers of intermediate experience and is a good moored alternative when drift conditions are unsuitable. It is not listed on current Mike Ball itinerary pages, so it is probably an occasional site. Its mooring and moderate depth make it one of the simpler dives on the reef.
