Meet the site
Currimundi Reef is an offshore reef off Currimundi, the suburb between Kawana and Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.
What can be said is regional. The southern Sunshine Coast is dominated by sandy beaches, and the reefs that exist are rocky outcrops and coffee-rock ledges supporting algae, sponges, soft corals and subtropical reef fish, with rays, wobbegongs and turtles. The Sea Slug Forum describes Caloundra diving generally as shallow, surgy and often dirty, reflecting the influence of Pumicestone Passage and the Caloundra bar on visibility.
Access is by private boat only: either the long run south from Mooloolaba or a crossing of the Caloundra bar, which is dangerous in swell. With no mooring, operator or published mark, this is a site for local divers who already know it.
Visitors wanting reef diving on the southern Sunshine Coast should dive the Gneerings, Mudjimba Island or the ex-HMAS Brisbane from Mooloolaba, or snorkel the Kings Beach reef on a calm day. If you have local knowledge of the reef, share it with Mooloolaba dive operators or clubs – reports from divers are the only way sites like this get properly documented.
