Meet the site
Deep Creek is listed on Wikivoyage among the Victor Harbor–southern Fleurieu dive areas, alongside the better-known Blowhole Beach, but there is no published dive guide for its specific beaches. Deep Creek Conservation Park protects a spectacular stretch of the southern Fleurieu coast, with steep valleys running down to rocky beaches on Backstairs Passage. Boat Harbor Beach, reachable by a steep gravel road (4WD recommended) or a shorter walk, and Deep Creek Cove, reached only by a 6.5 km return hike, are the two main access points to the water. Visitors report dolphins at Boat Harbor Beach, and the coast is broadly similar to the Blowhole: rocky reef, boulders and kelp exposed to the clean, cold water of Backstairs Passage, which should support crayfish, blue groper, harlequin fish, wrasse, sweep, leatherjackets, abalone and possibly seadragons and seals. These are expectations based on the Blowhole and regional ecology rather than documented dive observations. The main constraints are access and exposure. Carrying scuba gear down the steep tracks is hard, and the beaches face directly into the prevailing south-westerly swell, with strong tidal streams in the passage. Diving here is only realistic on rare calm days, and should be done with local knowledge. For most divers, Deep Creek is best treated as a snorkelling or freediving destination combined with camping in the park, or as an exploratory dive for experienced, self-sufficient groups. Anyone who dives it is encouraged to report conditions and marine life to the Scuba Divers Federation of SA, as no recent account exists.
