Meet the site
Delwood Beach is the pocket of sand and grass on the Manly Scenic Walkway between Fairlight Beach and Manly Cove, a place most people pass on the way to somewhere else, and Vizzbud lists it as 'a popular site for introducing newer divers to the harbour environment'. The bottom is patchy reef and sand at 3–12 m with wharf pylons that host the harbour's small animals, and the western end runs into the boulder field that the VIZ club describes extending from the Fairlight reef toward Delwood, so the two sites can be dived as one for those with the air. The life is the North Harbour reserve's: White's seahorses on the pier pylons, blue-ringed octopus under the rocks, cuttlefish and octopus at night, Port Jackson sharks in winter, leatherjackets, old wives, bream and yellowtail, with the bigger reef fish and the two small wrecks a few hundred metres west at Fairlight. Vizzbud rightly notes it is best at night when the macro life is active and the day-time boats have gone. It offers nothing that Fairlight does not, but it is quieter, has an easier sand entry than the Fairlight Crescent platform, and gives a second choice of parking on busy days. It is inside the aquatic reserve, so nothing may be taken. Delwood suits beginners, night divers and photographers of small things; the address given by Vizzbud ('Seaforth') is wrong – the beach is in Fairlight. Practically, most divers treat Delwood and Fairlight as one long shoreline: enter at whichever has the parking, dive west or east along the reef at 5–9 m, and exit at the other, walking back along the Manly Scenic Walkway in wetsuits – a five-minute stroll that makes a one-way dive easy and safe.
