Meet the site
Dinner Plates is named in the Aussie Marine Adventures Muiron series as one of the five most popular moored sites around the islands, and its name refers to large tabular (plate) corals — the Acropora tables that stacked across the Muiron reefs in their prime.
Plate coral fields create shelter for schools of small reef fish, and larger species such as coral trout, sweetlips and cod lurk beneath the tables. Turtles and reef sharks cruise over the top, and manta rays pass through the islands from winter into spring. Depths are relatively shallow, making it a relaxed dive suitable for Open Water divers and good for snorkellers when the water is calm.
Table corals are among the most heat-sensitive of all corals, so this site is likely to have been among the hardest hit by the 2025 marine heatwave, when northern Ningaloo recorded high coral mortality. Divers visiting now should expect a changed reef. Dive Ningaloo has paused Muiron trips; confirm with other operators.
About the Muirons: North and South Muiron are two low, uninhabited limestone islands about 15 km north-east of the tip of North West Cape, protected within the World Heritage-listed Muiron Islands Marine Management Area. They are reached only by boat, which has kept the surrounding reefs relatively untouched. The waters are visited by dolphins, dugong, pilot whales and, from July to October, migrating humpback whales, and turtles nest on the island beaches in summer. The islands are well known for strong currents and changeable conditions, so dives are always chosen on the day by the skipper according to wind, swell and tide, and a day on the Muirons usually combines two sites with lunch on the boat in the lee of the islands.
