Dolphin Point is Hayman Island's big-fish site. 100 Magic Miles describes rugged terrain of coral outcrops and huge boulders – rock slabs the size of houses – on a sloping seabed from 5 to 18 m, with trevally, mackerel, barracuda and occasional sharks. Texas T Charters adds white-tip reef sharks, hammerheads and tuna to the list, and notes large coral bommies among the boulders, with abundant big marine life year-round. The point's position at the north-western corner of Hayman exposes it to tidal streams running through the channels between Hayman, Hook and the outer islands, and that water movement brings the pelagics. The boulders create a landscape of gaps, overhangs and passages where fish shelter from the current, and coral grows on their upper surfaces. It is not a snorkelling site – too deep – and it is not a beginner dive when the current runs. 100 Magic Miles notes it is relatively deep with potential currents, so divers should be comfortable drifting and ascending with an SMB if needed. On a slack tide with good visibility, though, it is one of the most exciting fringing-reef dives in the Whitsundays. Dolphin Point is visited less often than nearby Blue Pearl Bay, and mainly by dive boats with certified divers. The effect of Cyclone Debbie on its coral is not specifically documented, but the boulder topography is unaffected. It is in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park; confirm zoning before fishing. A dive here pairs naturally with an easy second dive in sheltered Blue Pearl Bay a short distance south, giving a day that combines current-fed pelagic action with relaxed coral-garden diving.
