Meet the site
East Meets West is one of the newer moorings on the Cairns outer reef, added by Passions of Paradise in 2016 at the eastern end of Thetford Reef. Its name reflects its structure: along this section the reef changes from a solid wall into a scatter of small bommies, so a single dive takes in both types of terrain. The operator describes it as protected from summer northerly winds and suitable for calm-water snorkelling and diving, and that is its role on the Passions roster, alongside sites such as Point Break on Flynn and The Drop on Milln. The wall section is covered in hard corals with anemones and soft corals, and the transition zone where it breaks up is often the most productive part of the dive, as fish use the gaps and small bommies for shelter. Expect schools of fusiliers and damsels, parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish and angelfish on the coral, coral trout and cod under ledges, and turtles and reef sharks passing along the edge. Thetford's giant clams, stingrays and moray eels may also be seen. The depth is modest and there is usually little current, so the site suits divers of all levels and makes a good snorkelling stop for non-divers on the same boat. Because it was established relatively recently and is used only in particular conditions, published detail is thin and depth figures here are estimates based on the operator's description. The site gives the operator a sheltered option on summer days when many of the traditional south-east-sheltered moorings are choppy, and it tends to be uncrowded.
