Meet the site
Egeria Point is the prominent headland at the south-western end of the island's west coast, named after HMS Egeria, the Royal Navy survey ship whose 1887 visit preceded the island's annexation. Extra Divers describe it as one of the island's best shark dives, with open-ocean species, reef life and superb visibility, capturing 'that thrilling Christmas Island edge'.
The dive follows the reef and wall around the point. Hard corals cover the reef top, and the wall carries fans, whips and sponges, with gorgonians like those at neighbouring Pig Rock. The attraction, though, is in the blue: points like Egeria concentrate currents and therefore baitfish and predators. Grey reef sharks, whitetips and occasionally silvertips and hammerheads patrol, along with dogtooth tuna, trevally, rainbow runners and schools of barracuda. Mantas and whale sharks are possible in season, and dolphins frequent the west coast.
Visibility is often the best on the island – 40 m or more is common – because the site faces the open Indian Ocean with no run-off. That clarity and the pelagic action come at a price: this is the most exposed dive site on the island's regular circuit, an hour's boat ride from Flying Fish Cove, and it can have strong currents and swell. It is dived only on the calmest days, most often late in the dry season.
Egeria Point suits experienced divers comfortable in current, with good air consumption and DSMB skills. It is usually combined with Pig Rock, and those who get to dive it tend to count it among the highlights of a Christmas Island trip.
