Meet the site
Fish Eyes is a cliff-side reef near Bremer Bay named for its most striking feature: a sculpted hole in the granite in the shape of an eye socket. Marine Life Network describes the dive as following the cliffs eastward from the water entry around Black Point to a point about halfway along, where granite boulders in 14-16 m are covered with hard coral, soft coral and sponges.
The site is known for leafy seadragons, which drift over the weed-fringed boulders, and for visits from Australian sea lions and, occasionally, turtles carried south in warm water. The boulders shelter harlequin fish, blue groper, western blue devils, morwong and schools of sweep, and the coral and sponge growth – including patches of plate coral – is lush for this latitude.
The dive is more committing than the Bremer Bay shore trails: the swim along the cliffs is long, the site is exposed to swell, and the entry and exit are on rock. It suits experienced divers on a calm day, ideally with local guidance.
Little else is published about the site, and its exact location is best confirmed with the Bremer Bay dive shop, which can also advise whether a boat drop-off is more practical than the long surface swim along the cliffs. Carry a torch to look into the eye itself and the undercuts nearby, where crayfish and cardinalfish shelter.
