The Flower Gardens is the southern end of St Crispin Reef, the site that gives the whole reef its nickname. Visit Port Douglas Daintree describes it as a shallow site with feather stars, butterflyfish, wrasse, parrotfish, nudibranchs and pairs of foxface rabbitfish, and notes that St Crispin is a quieter, beginner-friendly reef visited by Calypso. Wavelength places the site near the southern gap, where water movement supports thriving coral. That water movement is the key. As the tide flows through the gap it brings plankton and keeps the water fresh, which suits soft corals and filter feeders. Feather stars perch on coral heads with arms extended into the flow, and soft corals in pinks, purples and creams give the site its floral look. Around them, schools of fusiliers and sergeant majors swirl, sweetlips hang in the shelter of coral heads, and bumphead parrotfish move through in groups. Foxface rabbitfish, bright yellow with a black-and-white face, are usually seen in pairs grazing on algae. Butterflyfish are also paired, and wrasse and parrotfish are everywhere. The small life is rewarding: nudibranchs, sea squirts, urchins and hermit crabs reward a slow look. Depths are shallow – most of the site is within about 8 m – so it suits snorkellers, discover-scuba participants and new divers, and it makes a relaxing last dive. Visibility is typically 10–25 m. Because only four moorings serve St Crispin, the Flower Gardens is uncrowded compared with the flagship outer reef sites. It is a good choice for divers who like colour, small creatures and easy conditions.
