Meet the site
Fraggle Rock is another of the Muirons' five most popular moored sites. Travel accounts from Exmouth Diving Centre trips record trumpetfish, glassfish, pennantfish (bannerfish) and giant groupers on the dive, and the Aussie Marine Adventures series groups it with sites that have networks of tunnels and swim-throughs filled with swarms of glassfish and large cod.
The reef is rocky limestone outcrops with holes, overhangs and gaps at 8–20 m, covered in hard and soft corals and sponges. Large groupers and cod shelter in the holes, schools of glassfish fill the shade, and reef sharks, turtles and nudibranchs are regular sightings. It is usually the second dive of a Muiron day after Cod Spot, when the skipper wants a more sheltered mooring.
Visibility can drop markedly around the full moon spawning period in autumn, when accounts describe cloudy water, but the fish life remains. Suitable for Open Water divers.
Muiron trips have been affected by the 2025 bleaching event and Dive Ningaloo's pause; check with other operators for current trips.
About the Muirons: North and South Muiron are two low, uninhabited limestone islands about 15 km north-east of the tip of North West Cape, protected within the World Heritage-listed Muiron Islands Marine Management Area. They are reached only by boat, which has kept the surrounding reefs relatively untouched. The waters are visited by dolphins, dugong, pilot whales and, from July to October, migrating humpback whales, and turtles nest on the island beaches in summer. The islands are well known for strong currents and changeable conditions, so dives are always chosen on the day by the skipper according to wind, swell and tide, and a day on the Muirons usually combines two sites with lunch on the boat in the lee of the islands.
