Meet the site
Garden Bay is a small bay near Malua Bay, about 12 km south of Batemans Bay, and it was one of the shore dives in Spirit Divers' site guide. It was rated Easy for Open Water divers, with a maximum depth of 10 m, and described as an easy dive and well worth a look. It has a rocky bottom with broken reef throughout and a sandy patch in the centre that is ideal for training skills. Spirit Divers particularly recommended it as a night dive.
The broken reef creates plenty of small ledges, crevices and holes. These hold octopus, cuttlefish, small wobbegongs and Port Jackson sharks, along with blennies, gobies and crabs. Nudibranchs feed on the sponges and ascidians. Fish include blue groper, leatherjackets, sweep, luderick and wrasse, and stingrays and flathead are often seen on the sand. At night, the reef is busy with octopus, squid, shrimps and sleeping fish.
The site suits new divers, training groups, photographers and night divers. It is shallow, easy to navigate and has a simple beach entry. It complements Pretty Point and Guerilla Bay nearby, with the choice depending on wind: Garden Bay prefers westerlies, the other two prefer northerlies. The published description is brief, so depths and features here are indicative, and coordinates are approximate. The site is within the Batemans Marine Park, so fishing and collecting are subject to zoning. On a night dive, a light left on the beach makes finding the exit much easier, and a compass heading taken before entry helps too.
