Meet the site
Gary's Lagoon – also called Gary's Inlet – is the sheltered heart of Bait Reef and the site operators use for snorkellers, introductory divers and relaxed second dives. Tourism Bowen describes it as an ideal entry point for snorkellers and new divers, with excellent coral cover and easy diving before venturing into deeper water. 100 Magic Miles gives depths of 4–18 m and visibility of 10–20 m, and describes walls of solid coral forming the inlet, with a sandy bottom scattered with low coral bommies. The protected water holds a good range of life: large soft corals, reef fish, turtles and wobbegong sharks resting on the sand, with cod, mackerel, barracuda, coral trout and giant anemones listed by the guide, and occasional manta rays. The shallow coral at the inlet's edge makes very good snorkelling, and the guide mentions a beautiful unnamed lagoon to the east with resident reef sharks. Current is minimal inside the inlet but can be a problem outside, so divers should stay within the lagoon. The contrast with Bait Reef's exposed sites – the Stepping Stones, Manta Ray Drop-off and Southern Face, which reach 36 m – is part of its value: it gives mixed groups a place where everyone can enjoy the reef safely. Bait Reef is a Marine National Park green zone. Gary's Lagoon is used by Explore Group and other Bait Reef operators whenever snorkellers or new divers are aboard, and it is a good first dive for certified divers before moving to the deeper sites.
