The reef is a shallow fringe of rock and coral, mostly in 1-5 m. It supports a surprising variety of soft corals and hard coral species for such a turbid, tidal location, along with anemones, sponges, nudibranchs and small reef fish. The site is heavily fished, so large fish are limited, but turtles are often seen along this part of the Hervey Bay foreshore, and the invertebrate life rewards a slow look.
Timing is everything. Hervey Bay has a large tidal range, and on spring tides the reef is swept by current and clouded with silt; marinelife.org.au recommends a neap tide at slack water. High-tide slack gives enough depth to float over the reef without touching it. Visibility is rarely more than a few metres, so manage expectations – this is a relaxed, shallow nature snorkel rather than a showpiece dive.
It suits snorkellers, families, beginners wanting an easy shore dive, and macro photographers staying in Hervey Bay who want to get wet between boat trips. The grassy foreshore, parking and a short walk to the water make it simple to organise. There is no dive shop on site, so fill tanks in Urangan beforehand, and tell someone ashore your plan: the foreshore is quiet and the site is unpatrolled.
