Meet the site
Geraldton's harbour structures – the fishing boat harbour jetties, Fishermen's Wharf and the breakwater walls around the Batavia Coast Marina – are listed by Marine Life Network as a shallow, murky dive where a range of invertebrates and many reef fish shelter under the structures, with the caution to avoid port traffic.
The piles and rock walls carry sponges, ascidians, oysters and soft growth, with nudibranchs, shrimps and crabs among them, and fish such as buffalo bream, sweep, trumpeter, bullseyes and juvenile snapper. Occasional rays and turtles move in and out of the harbour.
It is not a destination dive; the visibility is poor and access is constrained by port operations. But it can be a useful macro or night dive on days when wind rules out Point Moore, provided permission and safety arrangements are in place.
