Meet the site
The South-West Wall is the gentlest of the Gold Coast Seaway's dive areas: a rocky reef along the inside of the southern breakwater, entered from a small beach right beside the Doug Jennings Park car park. Experience Gold Coast describes it as beginner-friendly with an easy entry and a shallow decline, and Gold Coast Dive Adventures lists it as the Seaway's beach entry. Depths are mostly 2-8 m, so it is ideal for training, for new divers building confidence and for snorkellers on a calm high tide. Despite its easy access, the site shares much of the Seaway's marine life. The rocks shelter moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish and stonefish, and small reef fish, bream and juvenile tropicals gather in the gaps. Rays and shovelnose rays rest on the sand, wobbegongs lie under ledges, and giant groupers and schools of trevally sometimes move in from the main channel. It is also a good macro site, with nudibranchs, shrimps, crabs and occasional seahorses on the rocks and debris. The main concerns are the tide and the boats. Like all Seaway sites, it should be dived at the end of the incoming tide and around high-tide slack, when the water is clearest and the current weakest. Boats move along the Broadwater close by, so divers should get down quickly after entering and stay close to the bottom, as local guides advise. With toilets, a shower and parking within a few metres of the water, it is one of the most convenient shore dives on the east coast and a good warm-up before tackling the South Wall and pipes.
