Meet the site
Gorgonian Wall is listed by Mike Ball Dive Expeditions on its Far Northern Reefs expedition itinerary as one of the Ribbon Reef sites visited, alongside the Cod Hole, Lighthouse Bommie, Goggle Gardens, Coral Kingdom, Pixie Pinnacle, Cracker Jack and Steve's Bommie. That expedition, a 650-mile loop through the Coral Sea, the Far Northern Reefs and the Ribbons, is an occasional special itinerary rather than a weekly trip, so the site is dived infrequently.
No detailed public description of the site was found. As the name suggests, it is presumably a reef wall notable for its gorgonian sea fans, the large branching colonies that grow across the current on steep outer-reef faces. Other Ribbon Reef walls give an idea of what to expect: at Vertical Gardens and West End, Mike Ball's guides describe large gorgonians in reds, pinks and golds, often hosting pygmy seahorses on the deeper fans, with soft corals, sea whips and schooling anthias along the face. Those comparisons are indicative only.
The usual Ribbon Reef fauna would apply: reef sharks along the drop-off, trevally, fusiliers and unicornfish in the blue, Maori wrasse, sweetlips and groupers, and nudibranchs and small crustaceans on the wall. In June and July dwarf minke whales range through the northern Ribbons.
Divers booked on the Far Northern expedition should ask the crew for the site's location and depth profile, and the record should be updated when better information is available. Until then, plan it as a moderate wall dive with a possible current and keep a margin on depth, as fan-covered walls tempt divers deeper than they intend.
