Meet the site
Grange Jetty is a heritage timber jetty on Adelaide's northern beaches, close to the Grange Hotel and the historic Esplanade terraces. The Grange-Henley coast is a gently sloping sandy shore with seagrass further offshore, and the jetty extends over shallow sand. Divers can expect a shallow, sandy dive among the piles with modest growth of algae and invertebrates, small fish, crabs, and possibly cuttlefish, octopus and rays at night. Offshore, the Grange Tyre Reef, laid by the Fisheries Department in the late 1970s, lies about 4 km out and is a far more interesting dive for those with a boat. As with the other northern metro jetties, visibility is often poor after westerly winds or rain, and the jetty is well used by anglers and swimmers. That makes Grange a calm-morning snorkel or an exploratory local night dive rather than a destination. For divers living nearby it offers the convenience of a jetty within minutes of home, and a chance to record species on an under-surveyed structure; reports can be shared with the Scuba Divers Federation of SA or the Marine Life Society of SA, which maintain local site information. Anyone diving here should stay clear of lines and carry a torch and surface marker. The Grange Hotel and nearby cafes make a pleasant post-dive stop, and the walk along the Esplanade to Henley Square is a local favourite.
