Meet the site
The jetty and breakwater on the northern side of Granite Island were built in the 1860s-1870s, when Victor Harbor served as the ocean port for the Murray River trade, and the island is still linked to town by the causeway and its horse-drawn tram. Today the jetty is a tourist attraction, with the causeway walk, tram and (in recent years) a floating aquarium operation nearby. The Marine Life Network notes that this shallow jetty is occasionally used for emergency dives in bad weather but suffers from poor visibility. That sums up the site: it is sheltered from the southerly swell that closes most of Encounter Bay, but the water is often murky. The breakwater rocks and jetty structures carry algae and invertebrates, and small fish such as sweep, magpie perch and wrasse live among them; crabs, sea stars and occasional cuttlefish may be found in the rubble. Seals frequent the area around the island. Divers who have driven from Adelaide to find the Bluff and Whale Bones blown out by a southerly may still get wet here, and it can be a useful spot for a skills refresher or a quick look at the island's sheltered side. It is not a destination dive. Be aware that the causeway and jetty are busy tourist areas, so be courteous with gear, keep clear of anglers, and check for any restrictions around commercial operations before entering the water. Stay on the sheltered side, away from boat traffic in the channel. After the dive, the island's walking trail and cafe are a short stroll away.
