Meet the site
Gutters Central (AR2) is the westernmost of the four engineered reef complexes installed in 2019, placed in about 28 m of water in the channel country west of Fenton Patches known to anglers as the Gutters or North Gutter. The 2019 installation was part of an $8.3 million NT Government artificial reef project described at the time as the largest single installation of artificial reefs in the Southern Hemisphere, with a design life of well over 100 years. Each module is a purpose-built concrete structure about 5 m tall, 4 m square at the base and weighing about 24 tonnes, designed with openings and internal cells to provide shelter at several levels, and the modules are grouped into a reef complex rather than a single block.
The Gutters are a naturally productive area where tidal streams sweep through channels between banks, and the reef complex was sited to take advantage of that flow. For divers this means two things: fish life around the modules can be excellent, with snapper, fingermark, cod, jewfish, trevally, queenfish and mackerel all recorded by anglers, and the current can be fierce outside a short slack window.
Underwater, expect a cluster of tall concrete towers on sand and shell, with marine growth – sponges, hydroids, oysters and soft corals – steadily covering the concrete since 2019. The internal cells of each module give shelter to cod and jewfish, while baitfish hang above the tops.
There are almost no published diver reports from Gutters Central, and it should be treated as an exploratory advanced dive for experienced Darwin divers with their own boat. It is a logical add-on to a Fenton Patches day for those wanting to see the engineered reefs, provided the tide window allows.
