Meet the site
Hall Bank is an offshore limestone reef in Gage Roads, around 5 km off the North Fremantle coast, and a regular boat dive for Fremantle-based operators. It is close to port, shallow and sheltered enough by Rottnest that it can be dived on many days when more exposed reefs are rough, and the water is usually clearer than at the inshore shore sites.
The reef rises from sand at 10–12 m to a top around 5 m. Its surface and edges carry colonies of sponges and corals, including small hard corals, sea whips and colourful encrusting sponges. The edges form ledges and undercuts with sandy patches between. Western wobbegongs and cat sharks rest under the ledges, stingarees and cuttlefish use the sand, and lionfish and reef fish such as western blue devils, buffalo bream, wrasse and morwong move over the top. Turtles are sometimes seen.
Because the reef is broad and low, it is easy to lose your bearings, and Bucket List Diver recommends Advanced training or a guide for navigation even though the depths suit all levels. Maximum depth is about 12 m, so bottom times are long.
Hall Bank suits Open Water divers wanting an easy offshore reef without the long run to Rottnest, and it makes a good second dive or checkout dive. It also works as a sheltered alternative when Rottnest's western sites are unsafe. Because it is a boat site in open water, carry a surface marker buoy and stay in touch with the boat crew, particularly when the sea breeze starts to build.
