Meet the site
Hamersley Pool is a reef-enclosed tidal pool on West Coast Drive, about 600 m north of Mettams Pool, and a quieter alternative to its busy neighbour. It sits within Marmion Marine Park, and Perth Is OK describes it as suitable for beginners and families, with the option for experienced snorkellers to venture further out.
The pool is shallow and sandy, enclosed by weathered limestone with ledges, holes and small overhangs. The fish life is similar to Mettams: wrasse, juvenile buffalo bream, old wives, stripeys, scalyfin, western blue devils and leatherjackets, with rays and octopus around the reef and sand. Sea stars, urchins and algae cover the rocks.
The reef gives shelter, but like all the Sunset Coast sites it is affected by swell, and it is best on flat mornings after easterly weather. At low tide the pool becomes very shallow, which suits young children but limits snorkelling for adults.
Hamersley Pool suits families and snorkellers who want the Mettams experience with fewer people. It is too shallow for a worthwhile scuba dive except on the outer reef in calm conditions.
Published detail is limited to snorkelling guides, so depth and position are approximate. Water temperatures are about 17 °C in winter and 22–23 °C in late summer. Toilets and parking are shared with Mettams Pool, a short walk south. Because the pool is sheltered and shallow, it is also a pleasant spot for a first snorkel lesson on a calm summer morning. Bring reef shoes for the rocky edges and a float for younger children.
