East Reef, off the eastern side of Hayman Island, is a site that 100 Magic Miles rates highly for its coral but warns is hard to get to. The guide describes very good coral cover in shallow water, 6–8 m, cut with numerous small canyons, and large plate corals creating ledges; small friendly reef fish are abundant, and the snorkelling is 'excellent' over the shallow coral. The reef is open to winds from almost every direction and to tidal currents, so it is diveable only on very calm days at slack tide – conditions that occur most often in the calm build-up months of October to December. Because anchoring is difficult and conditions change quickly, a live boat drop and pick-up is the sensible approach. The site suits snorkellers and divers happy to stay shallow; the interest is in the canyons and coral structure rather than depth. Cyclone Debbie's effect on the site is not specifically documented, though Hayman's western bays were hit hard. Treat this as a calm-day bonus site to check with local skippers.
