Helm's Deep is a channel drift dive through the gap separating Agincourt reefs 2A and 2B, one of the natural passages where tidal water pours between the Coral Sea and the back-reef lagoon. The dive depends entirely on the tide. As water moves through the gap it carries plankton, and the channel sides and floor are covered with the corals that thrive on it – sea fans, soft corals and big plate and table corals leaning into the flow. Fish life follows the current: fusiliers and surgeonfish in large schools, trevally and mackerel hunting along the edges, and grey reef sharks cruising into the flow at the mouth of the channel. Barramundi cod – a secretive, beautifully spotted grouper – shelter under ledges and coral tables, and turtles rest in the lee of the buttresses. The appeal is the sensation of flying along a reef with the scenery unfolding beneath you. The guide selects the entry point, drops the group up-current and follows with a surface marker buoy while the tender tracks the bubbles for pick-up. You need to descend quickly, stay close to the group and manage your buoyancy in moving water – hence the recommendation for Advanced Open Water or experienced divers. Current strength varies from a gentle push on the neaps to a brisk ride on spring tides, and operators schedule the dive only when conditions suit. Visibility is usually good, often 20 m or more, because clean oceanic water floods the channel on the incoming tide. This is a dive for those who enjoy drift diving and want a high-energy contrast to the moored sites.
