Meet the site
Honeymoon Bay is a tiny, almost circular bay on the northern shore of Jervis Bay near Longnose Point, famous for its white sand, clear water and bush camping. It lies on the Beecroft Peninsula, which is the Department of Defence's Beecroft Weapons Range, so it is only accessible by road when the range is open to the public – generally weekends and school holidays – and the campground is booked out in peak periods.
The Currarong Community Association describes it as a gentle, car-accessible dive, and it is equally good for snorkelling. The bay floor is sand and seagrass fringed by rocky reef along both sides, deepening to around 10 m at the mouth. Luderick and bream graze the rocks, cuttlefish and small rays are common, weedy sea dragons are occasionally seen in the weed at the mouth, and schools of small fish crowd the sheltered water. Visibility is often very good because the bay is flushed by clean water from the entrance.
The shelter makes Honeymoon Bay a very easy dive – ideal for beginners, families, snorkellers and night dives for those camping there. The limitations are access and crowds: when the range is closed the bay cannot be reached by road, and on busy weekends boats anchor inside the bay, so divers must tow a float. It is also part of the Jervis Bay Marine Park; check zoning before taking anything. For divers staying in Currarong or camping on the peninsula it is a delightful and reliable shallow site, and it serves as a base for exploring Longnose Point and Darts Point by kayak or small boat.
