Horseshoe Reef is one of the lagoon snorkel sites visited by Lord Howe's snorkel-boat operators. Islander Cruises lists it among its southern sanctuary zone sites with Erscott's Hole, Comet's Hole, Erscott's Reef and Stephen's Hole, and Pinetrees Lodge includes 'Horseshoe' among the boat-access snorkel sites, which it says have brighter coral than the beach sites.
The southern sanctuary zone of the lagoon is described by Islander Cruises as having 'the greatest diversity of coral reefs and fish species available', and the neighbouring holes give a good idea of what to expect: coral gardens with Lord Howe Island bluefish, doubleheader wrasse, spangled emperor, McCulloch's anemonefish, butterflyfish and damsels, and turtles, rays, kingfish and trevally passing through. The name suggests a horseshoe-shaped reef.
Like all the lagoon sites, it is sheltered by the barrier reef and can be visited in almost all weather, and it is best at mid to high tide when there is more water over the coral. Visibility inside the lagoon is typically around 10 m in summer. It suits snorkellers of all abilities on a guided boat trip.
Because it is inside a sanctuary zone, fishing and collecting are prohibited, and boats use moorings rather than anchoring. Standing on the coral damages it, so snorkellers who need a rest should return to the boat. Confirm the location and conditions with the operator. Islander Cruises states it is the only operator offering daily access to all the lagoon's snorkel sites from the southern to the northern sanctuary.
