Meet the site
The Inner Gneering Shoals are the heart of Sunshine Coast reef diving. The reef system lies about 3 km offshore from Mooloolaba – a 15-minute boat ride – and covers a large area of rocky reef in roughly 8-20 m. Rather than one dive, it is a collection of named sites, each with a character of its own: Hanging Rock, the Caves, the Pinnacles, Nurse Rock (formerly Wobby Rock) and Coral Gardens (also called Fairyland) are the best known, and Scuba World lists more, including Lost Canyons, Nudi Junction, Pyramids, Ship Rock, Tunnels and Wonderland.
Weekend Notes describes a reef of soft corals, black coral trees, white coral whips and dramatic outcrops and shelves, with hard and soft corals in 10-15 m and multiple gutters that can disorient divers. Scuba Diver Life summarises the Inner Gneering, Outer Gneering and Murphy's reefs as gutters, ledges, caves and pinnacles with coral gardens, in 8-33 m.
The Gneerings are especially known for nudibranchs; Scuba Diver Life and PADI both note that the Sunshine Coast reefs have among the highest nudibranch diversity in the region. Larger residents include rays, loggerhead and green turtles, moray eels, wobbegongs and leopard sharks (summer), while sapphire damsels and fairy basslets add colour. Grey nurse sharks gather at Nurse Rock in winter.
The reef suits every level, from students doing training dives on the shallower sites to experienced photographers working the ledges. Visibility averages around 12 m offshore, better after southerly winds.
