Meet the site
The drift from Inscription Point to The Monuments strings together the two best shore dives on the southern side of Botany Bay into one long one-way swim, and on the right tide it is the most relaxed way to see the Kurnell shore. It begins at The Steps platform below the Inscription Point car park, among large boulders close to shore, and once on the sand at about 10 m the incoming tide does most of the work, carrying you north-west along the reef edge past isolated rock outcrops in 12–14 m. The reef here carries some of the best sponge gardens in Sydney – sea fans, tube worms, ascidians and lace coral on every boulder – and it culminates in a prominent wall about three metres high honeycombed with overhangs and cave-like hollows, the same wall that Monuments divers reach from the other end. The sand edge along the whole route is seadragon habitat: ten or more are regularly seen and up to twenty on a single drift, and this stretch was the study area for a seadragon tagging project in which one tagged animal was recovered 1.3 km away. White's seahorses live on the sponges, hawksbill turtles and grey nurse sharks have both been encountered, and stingrays, flathead, leatherjackets, bream, moray eels, cuttlefish, schooling catfish and a long list of nudibranchs fill in the rest. Navigation is about reading the wall and the sand gutters so that you can leave the reef and reach the Monuments inlet or the beach to its west; several exits exist across the sandy bottom. It is only done on an incoming tide, it is superbly protected in a southerly, and it fails in north-easterly seas over about a metre. With a second car at the Monuments car park it is an easy hour of drifting past the richest reef in the bay, suitable for Open Water divers with a guide and a delight for photographers.
