Meet the site
Isabel Beach is a short run east of Flying Fish Cove along the Settlement shoreline. Curious Campers list it among the boat sites east of the cove, alongside Rocky Point, The Morgue and Coconut Point, and gazetteer data place the beach about 1.2 km north-east of Smith Point, below The Settlement's seafront along Gaze Road.
The Settlement coast has the same structure as Flying Fish Cove: a band of shallow fringing reef from the cliff and rock platform, then a coral slope that steepens into a drop-off. Nearby The Morgue has a shallow shelf of giant Acropora and feather stars sloping at about 35 degrees, and Isabel Beach is likely to be similar, with abundant hard coral and a rich community of reef fish – butterflyfish, angelfish including the endemic Christmas Island (Cocos) angelfish and hybrid butterflyfish, surgeonfish, triggerfish, wrasse and parrotfish. Turtles are common along this shoreline, and whitetip reef sharks and trevally patrol the edge.
Its main virtue is convenience: it is only minutes from the jetty, sheltered from the south-east trades and suitable for divers of all levels. Operators use such sites for short second dives or when the swell or wind rules out the longer runs west. Like the rest of the Settlement coast it is exposed to northerly swell in the wet season.
